Advice from a Tennessee Photographer for Stress-Free Photos in the National Park

If you’re planning a photo shoot in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, you’re in for an unforgettable experience. East Tennessee is one of the most scenic places in the country, with beautiful backgrounds ranging from misty mountain overlooks to dramatic and rugged waterfalls.

As a Tennessee photographer who works in the Smoky Mountains National Park often, I know the excitement of planning your session. I also know the small details that can easily cause stress if you’re not prepared. To help you feel ready, here are some tips that will make your Smoky Mountain photo shoot smooth, stress free, and unforgettable...

Download Directions Ahead of Time

The Smoky Mountains are beautiful, but cell service in the park is spotty and often nonexistent. The last thing you want is to be halfway to your shoot, lose service, and suddenly have no idea where to go.

To avoid this, download directions to your meeting point before you even leave your cabin or hotel. That way, even if your phone has no service, you’ll still know how to find your photographer and arrive on time. Be sure to check for any road closures or construction in the park before you go. Some areas may be temporarily inaccessible, and planning ahead ensures you won’t be caught off guard.

Ready to Book Your Tennessee Photo Shoot?

Whether it’s a surprise proposal, engagement photos, or an anniversary, you deserve a photographer with experience and passion. I love helping couples capture milestone moments by providing beautiful photos and an unforgettable experience.

Get a Photo of Your Photographer’s Car

This one might sound unusual, but I always do this with my clients! If you’re meeting your photographer at a trailhead or overlook, there’s often no cell service to call or text if you can’t find each other.

Asking your photographer to send a quick photo of their car ahead of time makes it so much easier to meet up, especially if it’s your first time working together. You’ll be able to spot each other right away, avoid delays, and start your session without stress.

Plan Ahead for Paid Parking

In 2023, Great Smoky Mountains National Park introduced paid parking. This is something that often catches visitors off guard. Not every trailhead has a kiosk, so it’s smart to swing by a visitor center to purchase your pass before heading to your session.

Check out the Great Smoky Mountain National Park website for more information on parking pass requirements and kiosk locations!

Check Weather, Road Closures, and Create a Backup Plan with Your Photographer

Weather in the Smokies can change quickly, so it’s important to check the forecast before your session and bring layers if needed. Snow, rain, or fog can affect hiking and trail conditions, so knowing what to expect will help you stay comfortable. Be sure to also check for road closures, as these can impact your timing and the locations you planned to visit.

Creating a backup plan with your photographer is a smart way to ensure your session can still happen even if something unexpected comes up. This could include having a backup date, a backup location, or both. Planning ahead like this will help your photo shoot go smoothly no matter what the weather or conditions bring.

Check out the Great Smoky Mountains National Park "Current Conditions" page for current information, they always keep this updated!

Communicate Your Vision with Your Photographer

Share your ideas, must-have shots, and preferences ahead of time! Clear communication ensures you get photos you love and helps your photographer plan the best locations, poses, and timing for your session.

"We had the absolute best time during our anniversary shoot with Katie Mae! She took her time and made sure we got everything we were looking to get, and she made the experience a blast. She was sure to capture all the perfect moments and we even got to see lots of wildlife along the way! I would 100% recommend using her for all things pictures"
